Impact Roofing & Plumbing - Dick Tayler Commemorative NZ 10000m Championships 2024 & Community Events.
Entries Close Sunday 7th January midnight.
7:00pm Saturday 13th January 2024, Caledonian Ground, Dunedin
50 years ago, Dick Tayler created one of New Zealand’s most famous athletics memories when he won gold in defeating the world record holder Englishman David Bedford in the 10000m at the opening track event of the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games. On that day Dick Tayler set the NZ Residents' 10000m record of 27:46.40, a record that remains still unbeaten today. Athletics Otago is proud to host the 2024 Athletics New Zealand 10000m Championships as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Dick Tayler’s epic achievement.
We warmly invite everyone to come and celebrate this special occasion with Dick Tayler by entering or watching from the grandstand and see NZ’s best athletes racing over 10000m. The first 100 entrants (subject to finishing) over all the races will receive a special 2024 Dick Tayler 50th Anniversary 10000m commemorative medal.

Community 10000m Run – Open to all community and club athletes
This is intended purely as a fun community event to celebrate the anniversary of Dick Tayler’s winning 10000m run.
Lap counting will be the sole responsibility of the individual or team. Timing will be completed using timing chips and the Webscorer app, with the mat at the start/finish line.
Those running the full 10000m (25 laps) on their own, will have priority over the inside lane at the changeover. Due to the limited time available to run the event, there is a 50 minute cutoff in terms of estimated time/ability of all individuals or teams entered.
Community 10000m Relay – Open to all community and club athletes
Relay teams can comprise up to 5 members (not restricted by club, age, or gender), over any combination of distances. A team of 5 could run a lap each, in any order, 5 times, and see how close they get to Dick’s 1974 time of 27.45!
Open Women’s 5000m - Open to all community and club athletes. This race is one of the last opportunities for NZ athletes to gain qualifying times for selection to represent New Zealand at the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Champs in Serbia on 30 March 2024.
